Screen Recorder: what you'd pay elsewhere

AltFTool's Screen Recorder captures a screen, window or tab through your browser's own screen-share picker and saves it as a WebM file, with no account and no length cap. Loom's Business plan is $18 per user/month, and its free Starter plan stops at 25 videos and 5-minute screen recordings. Microsoft Clipchamp's free tier also records your screen and exports watermark-free at up to 1080p, so a paid plan is not the only alternative.

Recording your screen to a video file: what the paid tools charge

Each figure is read from the vendor's own page on the date shown. Software pricing drifts — if a number here disagrees with the vendor's page, trust theirs.

Loom

USD list price

Recording the screen, with or without camera and microphone, and sharing the video as a hosted link with comments and transcripts.

Entry price

$18 per user/month

Business plan; Business + AI is $24 per user/month; Enterprise is 'Contact Sales'

Free tier

Starter is $0: up to 25 videos and screenshots, and 5-minute screen recordings.

The pricing page has a Monthly/Annually toggle with a 'SAVE UP TO 17%' badge, but the figure read showed only 'per user / month' and did not say which billing period it was for; the FAQ says you 'can be billed monthly, but save 17% if you pay annually.' The page uses '$' with no currency code. Loom is an Atlassian product and the page is served on atlassian.com.

Exporting an edited video at 4K (UHD) rather than being capped at 1080p.

Entry price

US$7.00 per user/month

paid yearly, listed as 'Clipchamp Editor Premium' on microsoft.com

US$84.00 per user/year, derived from the advertised US$7.00 user/month paid-yearly rate — Microsoft advertises the monthly-equivalent figure, not an annual total

Free tier

Genuinely generous: unlimited watermark-free exports up to 1080p, plus trim, crop and recording.

The cheaper Clipchamp Editor Standard at US$3.00 user/month paid yearly does NOT unlock 4K; it caps at 1080p. For personal accounts the premium features come bundled with Microsoft 365 Personal at US$99.99/year or Family at US$129.99/year; a standalone personal Premium subscription exists but Microsoft displays no figure for it.

What each free tier actually allows

Whether you need to pay at all depends on where the free plan's ceiling sits. Here it is in each vendor's own terms.

Loom

USD list price
  • Starter is $0. Atlassian's Starter FAQ states 'Up to 25 videos and screenshots' (the count includes archived videos) and '5-minute recording limits'; at the limit you cannot record more until you upgrade, though existing videos are not deleted. The pricing page lists Starter with 'Unlimited meeting length', 'Transcriptions in 50+ languages' and 'Comments and emoji reactions'.

Microsoft Clipchamp Premium

USD list price
  • Genuinely generous: unlimited watermark-free exports at up to 1080p HD, trim/crop/resize/rotate, screen, camera and voice recording, AI video and audio editing tools, and a free stock asset library. The 1080p ceiling and premium stock/brand-kit lockout are the only real constraints.

What the free Screen Recorder does not do

A comparison that cannot say what its own tool gives up is an advert.

  • No microphone or webcam. The only audio is what the browser's share picker offers (tab or system audio, depending on browser and OS), so you cannot narrate over the recording or add a face bubble the way Loom does.
  • No hosting, share link, viewer comments or transcript. You get a file, and getting it to someone is your job.
  • Output is WebM (VP9 or VP8) in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and MP4 only where the browser records MP4 itself, as Safari does. There is no format choice, and some editors and phones will not open WebM without converting it first.
  • The recording is held in the tab's memory until you download it. Closing or reloading the tab before you save it loses the recording.

What the free Screen Recorder does

  • Records a full screen, a window or a browser tab, chosen in the browser's own share dialog
  • Pause and resume, a running timer, and a choice of 24, 30 or 60 fps and two quality levels
  • The recording is assembled in the tab and downloaded as a WebM file; nothing is uploaded to us

Questions people actually ask

Is there a time limit on recordings?

We set no limit. Recording length is bounded by your device's memory, because the video stays in the browser tab until you download it. Loom's free Starter plan caps screen recordings at 5 minutes and keeps 25 videos.

Can I record my voice at the same time?

No. This tool does not open the microphone, so it records only screen audio, where the browser offers it. If you need narration or a webcam overlay, use Loom or Clipchamp's free tier, which record both.
