Resume Maker: what you'd pay elsewhere

AltFTool's Resume Maker lets you fill in your details and download a PDF, free and without an account. Zety's free plan downloads TXT only; its Pro trial is US$1.95 for 14 days and then auto-renews at US$25.95 every 4 weeks, or US$71.40 a year. Resume.io's trial is US$2.95 for 7 days, then US$29.95 every 4 weeks. Both builders do considerably more than ours, and the main thing to watch with them is the auto-renewing trial.

The PDF is a picture of the page. It is rendered to an image and placed in the PDF, so the text cannot be selected, and applicant tracking systems that parse resumes may read nothing from it. If the job goes through an ATS, use a builder that exports real text or Word.

Building a resume and downloading it as a PDF: what the paid tools charge

Resume.io

USD list price

Building resumes and cover letters from designed templates and downloading them as PDF.

Entry price

US$2.95 for a 7-day trial, then US$29.95 every 4 weeks

7-day trial that auto-renews; 7-day money-back guarantee

Free tier

Free plan: one resume and one cover letter; downloads limited.

Resume.io's page shows '$' without a currency code. A Quarterly plan is US$49.95 every 3 months. The FAQ describes the trial renewing into a 'monthly' membership, which does not match the 'every 4 weeks' wording in the plan table.

What each free tier actually allows

Whether you need to pay at all depends on where the free plan's ceiling sits. Here it is in each vendor's own terms.

Zety

USD list price
  • Zety's Basic Package is free with unlimited downloads, prints and edits, but in TXT format only. PDF and Word downloads require the Pro or Annual package.

Resume.io

USD list price
  • Resume.io's free plan is $0.00 for one resume and one cover letter with limited sharing and analytics. The pricing page says free downloads are TXT only; its help centre says free users can download a PDF in the Vancouver template or a TXT file, with the other 30+ designs requiring premium.

What the free Resume Maker does not do

A comparison that cannot say what its own tool gives up is an advert.

  • The PDF is a picture of the page. It is rendered to an image and placed in the PDF, so the text cannot be selected, and applicant tracking systems that parse resumes may read nothing from it. If the job goes through an ATS, use a builder that exports real text or Word.
  • One A4 page. Content that runs past the first page is not split onto a second one.
  • The 'ATS score' is a checklist of filled-in fields and keywords, not a test against any real applicant tracking system.
  • One template, no Word export, no cover letter and nothing is saved: closing the tab loses your resume.

What the free Resume Maker does

  • Sections for personal details, summary, experience, education, skills and projects
  • A completeness checklist that tells you which sections are thin
  • PDF download with no paywall and no watermark

Questions people actually ask

Will this resume pass an ATS?

We cannot promise it will. The download is an image-based PDF, which many applicant tracking systems cannot read. For applications that go through an ATS, a text-based PDF or a Word file is safer.

Are Zety and Resume.io free?

Both have free plans, but neither gives you a designed PDF for free. Zety's free plan downloads TXT only. Resume.io's pricing page says free downloads are TXT only, while its help centre says free users can also download a PDF in one template, the Vancouver design. Their paid access starts as a low-cost trial that auto-renews.
