Documentation and Q&A judged on how fast it answers the actual question
Every site here is judged on how quickly it gets a working developer from "I have a specific question" to a correct, current answer. Documentation accuracy is checked against the current stable release of whatever it documents, not an archived snapshot. Search and findability matter as much as the content itself, since a correct answer buried three clicks deep loses to a slightly thinner answer that surfaces immediately.
The top three
Mozilla · founded 2005
The single most trusted reference for how a browser actually behaves, maintained with a rigor most vendor documentation still does not match.
Stack Exchange · founded 2008
Traffic has genuinely dropped as AI coding assistants answer more first-pass questions directly, but the accumulated answer archive is still what those assistants were largely trained on.
Microsoft · founded 2008
Became the de facto identity layer for software developers almost by accident — a portfolio, a resume and a collaboration tool that outgrew its original pull-request feature entirely.
Full ranking
Filter, re-sort or switch view — every combination is a shareable URL.
Showing 13–14 of 14 ranked entries.
Forem · developer blogging
A blogging platform built specifically for developers, without Medium’s paywall or LinkedIn’s self-promotion tone — the quality bar is inconsistent because anyone can publish.
Smashing Media · design and dev articles
Long-form, heavily edited articles on design and front-end engineering, at a publishing pace that trades volume for a genuinely higher editorial bar than most dev blogs.
How this list is scored
Documentation accuracy is checked against the current stable release of whatever it documents, not an archived or outdated snapshot.
Questions
The accumulated archive of peer-reviewed answers still scores near the top on documentation accuracy and search, even as new-question volume declines.
No — traffic is shown for context only. Accuracy, findability and ad density decide the ranking.
AI assistants are covered separately in the AI Tools category. This list is specifically browser-based reference sites.
By measuring ads-per-scroll and interstitial frequency directly, not simply noting whether advertising is present at all.
