What does count: movement finishing relative to price, in-house versus outsourced calibers, servicing cost over a realistic ownership period, and how the watch has actually held up against decades of daily wear where that history exists. Independent and small-batch makers are scored on the same criteria as the majors, with no allowance made for brand size.

Why doesn’t waiting-list length or hype factor into the ranking?
Demand reflects marketing and scarcity as much as merit. A watch with a five-year waiting list and a watch you can buy today are scored on identical movement, case and value criteria.
How is an in-house movement weighted against a modified third-party one?
In-house calibers score higher on movement quality by default, but a well-finished, well-regulated outsourced movement — an ETA base heavily modified and decorated, for instance — can still score competitively on value.
Are vintage references eligible, or only current production?
Only current production references are scored here, since servicing cost and availability — a full 25% of the score — cannot be fairly assessed for a discontinued reference.
Does gold or platinum case metal automatically score higher than steel?
No. Precious metal raises the price, which factors into value, but finishing quality and movement are scored identically regardless of case material.
