Editorial rigor and staying power, not download counts
Chart position is a function of marketing budget as much as quality, so this list deliberately does not use audience size as a criterion at all. Editorial and production craft carry the most weight, which is why a handful of the most-downloaded shows in the world sit outside the top ten while smaller, more precisely made shows rank near the summit. Interview shows and heavily produced narrative series are judged on the same four criteria, which naturally rewards each format for doing its own job well rather than penalising either for not being the other.
The top three
Sarah Koenig · Serial Productions · 2014
Koenig spun a This American Life segment into its own show and spent twelve episodes second-guessing a 1999 murder conviction in real time, essentially inventing the true-crime podcast format and the modern podcast industry’s commercial viability along with it.
Ira Glass · WBEZ Chicago · Since 1995
Glass built a weekly structure — theme, then acts — simple enough to become the default format for narrative audio, and three decades later almost every serious storytelling podcast is still working some variation of the template he standardized.
Jad Abumrad · WNYC · Since 2002
Abumrad treated sound design as a genuine storytelling tool rather than decoration, layering music and effects underneath science stories until the production itself became as much a part of the argument as the facts being reported.

NPR · Since 2008
Planet Money launched during the 2008 financial crisis specifically to explain the crisis in plain language, and the show has kept that founding mission — dense economics translated into a genuinely entertaining twenty-minute story — ever since.
Michael Hobbes & Sarah Marshall · Since 2018
Hobbes and Marshall revisit 1980s and 90s moral panics and tabloid scandals with contemporary context the original coverage lacked, and the show’s central move — reexamining a story everyone thought they already understood — rarely gets old.
Hrishikesh Hirway · Since 2014
Hirway strips a single song down to its isolated instrumental and vocal tracks and lets the artist explain, piece by piece, exactly how it was built — a format so effective it later spun into a Netflix series without losing its intimacy.
Alex Blumberg · Gimlet Media · 2014
Blumberg recorded himself failing to pitch investors on the podcast company he was literally trying to start, turning the show’s own founding into its first and most compelling season — a meta move that effectively launched Gimlet Media itself.
Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Tommy Vietor & Dan Pfeiffer · Crooked Media · Since 2017
Four former Obama staffers built a political show that treats analysis and open partisanship as compatible rather than something to hide, and their insider experience gives its takes a specificity most punditry lacks.
Jonathan Goldstein · Gimlet Media · Since 2016
Goldstein tracks down people stuck on one specific regret from years ago — a lost friendship, an unresolved argument — and mediates an actual real-world resolution, turning a simple premise into some of the most quietly moving audio being made.
How this list is scored
Audience size excluded by design: download and listener figures are not part of the scoring criteria, only editorial craft, ambition, influence and consistency.
Questions
Audience size is not one of the four criteria at all — editorial and production craft together carry 55% of the score, and a smaller show executing its format precisely can outscore a bigger one that leans on personality over craft.
On the same four criteria, which naturally rewards different things — Rogan scores well on cultural influence and consistency but loses ground on production craft against heavily edited narrative shows.
Where it is well documented and relevant, yes — noted directly in the entry rather than ignored, as with Reply All’s internal controversies or the fact-checking criticism aimed at interview-format shows.
Quarterly. Long-running shows near the top rarely move; newer entrants typically need a couple of years of sustained quality before they are seriously considered for this company.
