Central Java, Indonesia · 9th century
The world’s largest Buddhist temple, built from roughly two million volcanic stone blocks without any mortar, was abandoned and buried under volcanic ash and jungle growth for centuries before Dutch colonial administrators rediscovered it in 1814. The only surviving Ancient Wonder of the World, built as a tomb for the pharaoh Khufu from roughly 2.3 million limestone blocks with a precision that still defies a fully agreed explanation of the construction method. It held the title of tallest human-made structure on Earth for almost 3,800 years, longer than any building before or since.

Not one continuous wall but a patchwork of fortifications built and rebuilt by successive dynasties over two thousand years, stretching a combined length estimated at over 21,000 kilometres including all branches and spurs. Most of what tourists actually visit today is Ming-era construction, since earlier sections have largely eroded back into the landscape.

Built by the Inca as a royal estate roughly 2,430 metres up in the Andes and abandoned within a century, it stayed unknown to the outside world until Hiram Bingham’s 1911 expedition brought it to global attention. Dry-stone construction fits blocks so precisely that no mortar was needed and few joints admit even a knife blade.
Ma’an Governorate, Jordan · c. 300 BCE
The Nabataeans carved an entire city into rose-coloured sandstone cliffs, engineering a water-management system sophisticated enough to support a desert trading capital of an estimated 20,000 people. Most visitors see only the Treasury facade near the entrance; the full site extends for several kilometres beyond it.

The largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman world, capable of seating an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and staged animal hunts, with an underground hypogeum of trapdoors and lift mechanisms that could raise scenery and combatants directly into the arena floor.

Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth, and it took an estimated 20,000 workers over two decades to complete in white Makrana marble that shifts colour with the light through the day. The emperor was later imprisoned by his own son within sight of it.

Built originally as a Hindu temple to Vishnu before gradually becoming Buddhist, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument on Earth by land area and the centrepiece of a much larger metropolitan complex that may once have supported close to a million people, one of the largest pre-industrial urban settlements ever documented.

The Maya city’s central pyramid, El Castillo, is engineered so precisely that during the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunlight and shadow form the illusion of a serpent slithering down its staircase — a deliberate astronomical alignment rather than a coincidence.
