About this ranking
Why do decades-old designs outrank recent releases?
Design longevity and resale value are directly measured criteria, and a piece has to survive the test of decades to score well on them. A brand-new release simply hasn’t had the chance yet, however well built it is.
Is flat-pack furniture automatically scored lower?
No. The IKEA Poäng chair ranks solidly here because the underlying cantilever engineering is genuinely sound. Flat-pack construction is only penalized when it can’t be disassembled and reassembled without damage.
How is "resale value" actually tracked?
Through consignment and auction platform pricing for designs old enough to have a secondary market, compared against original retail price adjusted for inflation.
Are licensed reproductions treated the same as originals?
