Recipes that survived a century of trends
Every entry here predates the current cocktail boom by decades, and most by more than a century. They are ranked on how well the original recipe still holds up against a modern palate, not on how creatively a bartender can reinterpret them. A few of these have documented, contested origin stories — where that is true, the story is noted rather than settled.
The top three
Florence, Italy · gin, Campari, vermouth
Equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, stirred and poured over ice with an orange twist — no shaking, no fine technique, nothing to master except the ratio. Count Camillo Negroni supposedly asked a bartender to strengthen his Americano in 1919, and the result has needed no revision since.
United States · gin or vodka, dry vermouth
The ratio has drifted drier for over a century — what started as roughly equal parts gin and vermouth is now often just a rinse of vermouth over cold gin. The debate over gin versus vodka, shaken versus stirred, has generated more opinion writing than any other drink on this list.
Louisville, Kentucky, USA · whiskey, sugar, bitters
Whiskey, sugar, Angostura bitters and a twist — generally considered the template every other cocktail eventually branched from, which is why bartenders still use “old fashioned” as shorthand for the entire spirit-forward category. Almost nothing has been added to the recipe since the 1880s.

London, UK · vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur
Created by bartender Dick Bradsell in the early 1980s after a customer asked for something that would "wake me up and mess me up" — vodka, fresh espresso and coffee liqueur, shaken hard enough to build a proper crema on top. The most successful new-classic of the last fifty years.
Veneto, Italy · Aperol, prosecco, soda
Aperol, prosecco and a splash of soda over ice — low alcohol, low complexity, and precisely engineered for long afternoons on an Italian terrace. Global sales exploded in the 2010s, turning a regional aperitivo habit into one of the best-selling cocktails on earth.
Mexico · tequila, grapefruit soda
Tequila and grapefruit soda over ice with a pinch of salt — outsells the Margarita within Mexico itself, despite far less international recognition. Its exact origin is undocumented, which has not stopped several bars from claiming credit.
Venice, Italy · prosecco, white peach purée
Prosecco and white peach purée, invented at Harry’s Bar in Venice and named for the pinkish hue that reminded its creator of a Bellini painting. Only really good with ripe white peaches in season — out of season it is a pale imitation of itself.
How this list is scored
Scored on the standard recipe recognised by the International Bartenders Association where one exists, not on any single bar’s house variation.
Questions
Equal parts, three ingredients, no shaking or fine technique required, and a balance point that has not needed revision in over a century. It is the hardest kind of recipe to improve on.
No — several, including the Martini and the Mojito, have murky or contested histories. Dates given reflect the earliest well-documented reference, not necessarily the drink’s true invention.
The figure reflects the standard recipe at typical bar measures. It moves with ice dilution and pour size in practice, but it is a useful relative guide between drinks.
Effectively yes — everything here predates the 2000s cocktail revival. Modern originals are excluded regardless of quality, because “classic” is the entire premise of the list.
