How it works
Simple numbers, clear meaning.
Weight compared with height
BMI compares your weight with your height. For example, 62 kg at 1.65 m tall gives a BMI of 22.8.
Placed into a group
Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obese.
Checked against your waist
BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so you can add your waist size too. A waist under half your height is a good sign.
Questions, answered
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. The calculator turns that into a healthy weight range for your exact height, so you can see where you stand in kilos or pounds.
Is BMI right for everyone?
It's a quick check, not a diagnosis. People with lots of muscle can show as overweight, and older adults can show as healthy while carrying extra fat. That's why we also show a waist check.
What is the Asian BMI scale?
People of Asian background tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, so health experts suggest lower limits: overweight from 23 and obese from 27.5. You can switch it on under “More options”.
Can I use it if I'm under 18?
You'll see your BMI number, but not an adult group. Children and teens are checked on growth charts made for their age — a doctor or school nurse can do that for you.
How do I measure my waist?
Wrap a tape measure around your middle at the level of your belly button. Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and read the number without pulling the tape tight.
