Spelling Checker: what you'd pay elsewhere

AltFTool's Spelling Checker flags spelling and grammar issues in English text and lets you apply the suggested fix, free and with no account. Grammarly Pro is US$12 per member/month averaged on the annual plan (US$144/year), or US$30 billed monthly. Grammarly's own Free plan already does spelling and grammar corrections, so for basic checking the honest comparison is between two free options; what Pro adds is rewriting, tone and plagiarism detection.

What each free tier actually allows

Whether you need to pay at all depends on where the free plan's ceiling sits. Here it is in each vendor's own terms.

Grammarly Pro

USD list price
  • Grammarly Free is US$0/month and includes spelling and grammar corrections, tone detection and 100 AI prompts per month. Full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, fluency suggestions, plagiarism and AI-text detection are Pro features.

What the free Spelling Checker does not do

A comparison that cannot say what its own tool gives up is an advert.

  • Your text is sent to the public LanguageTool API (api.languagetool.org) to be checked. It is not processed on your device, so do not paste anything confidential.
  • US English only. There is no language or dialect selector, and the public API applies its own request limits, which show up as a check that returns nothing.
  • No full-sentence rewrites, tone detection, plagiarism or AI-text detection, and no checking while you type inside Gmail, Docs or Word. That is what Grammarly Pro sells.
  • Nothing is saved: no personal dictionary, no style guide and no history.

What the free Spelling Checker does

  • Checks pasted text and lists each issue with suggested replacements
  • Apply one suggestion, or apply the first suggestion for every issue in one click
  • No account, no extension to install, no word counter

Questions people actually ask

Is my text kept private?

Not in the way a local tool would be. The check runs on LanguageTool's public API, so the text leaves your browser. For anything sensitive, use a checker that runs offline or one covered by an agreement with your employer.

Do I need Grammarly Pro just to fix spelling and grammar?

No. Grammarly's Free plan includes spelling and grammar corrections and 100 AI prompts a month. Pro is for full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment and plagiarism detection.
