A household paying ₹1,850 a month for electricity spends more on that than on mobile, DTH and broadband combined. It is also the payment most people make on autopilot from whichever app is on the home screen.
Why the offers are good here
Bill amounts are large and predictable, which makes them attractive for a bank to co-fund a promotion against. A flat ₹100 off a ₹2,000 bill is a 5% discount on a payment you were making anyway, with no behaviour change required beyond paying from a different app.
What to check each month
- Your card issuer's offer page, filtered to utilities — these rotate monthly and are not applied automatically.
- Whether your discom gives a prompt-payment or auto-debit rebate. Several do, most consumers never claim it, and it applies every month rather than once.
- Whether the app you use charges a convenience fee on card payments. On a ₹2,000 bill that fee can exceed the cashback.
The honest limit
Water bills are small and rarely carry worthwhile offers; credit card bill payments almost never do. Spend the attention on electricity, piped gas and insurance premiums, where the ticket size makes a percentage worth something, and pay the rest from whatever is convenient.
