Emergency Contraception: Morning-After Pill & Options

Emergency contraception (EC) is a backup method used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, condom breakage, or missed birth control pills. It is not meant for regular use and does not cause an abortion if a pregnancy is already established.

• Levonorgestrel Pills (e.g., Plan B): Available over-the-counter without a prescription. Most effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of intercourse. • Ulipristal Acetate (e.g., Ella): Prescription-only pill, highly effective for up to 120 hours (5 days) and maintains effectiveness better for individuals with higher body weights. • Copper IUD: Inserted by a doctor within 5 days of unprotected intercourse; this is the most effective form of emergency contraception and provides ongoing birth control.
