AltF NetCheck
Ping Test
This ping test measures the round-trip time between your browser and the nearest Cloudflare data centre, 20 times in a row, and reports the median as your ping plus the lowest, highest and jitter values. A good ping is under 50 ms for gaming and under 100 ms for video calls. The full test then also measures download and upload speed.

Your connection
Run a test to see your ISP, public IP (masked by default), approximate location and the server you were tested against.
The test talks to Cloudflare's speed-test servers, which see your IP address like any website does. AltFTool does not store your results; history stays in this browser.
Your speed history
Every test you run is saved here, in this browser only, so you can compare times of day, rooms or Wi-Fi vs cable. Nothing is uploaded.
What counts as a good ping?
- Under 20 ms: excellent. Typical of fibre to a nearby server.
- 20-50 ms: good. Fine for competitive online games.
- 50-100 ms: average. Calls and casual games are fine; fast shooters feel delayed.
- 100-150 ms: high. Noticeable lag in games and talk-over on calls.
- Over 150 ms: poor. Common on satellite, congested mobile data or distant servers.
How is a browser ping test different from the ping command?
The ping command sends ICMP packets; browsers cannot, so this test times tiny HTTP requests instead. Where the browser allows, it uses the Resource Timing API to count only the time from sending the request to the first byte back, minus the server's own processing time, which makes it close to a network-level ping. Expect it to read a few milliseconds higher than ICMP ping to the same place.
How to lower your ping
- Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, or move closer to the router.
- Stop downloads, updates and streams on other devices while gaming.
- Pick the game server or region closest to you.
- Enable SQM or QoS on your router if ping jumps when the line is busy (see the bufferbloat test).
- Ask your ISP about routing if ping to nearby servers is consistently high on a wired connection.
Ping Test FAQ
What is ping in a speed test?
Ping, or latency, is the time in milliseconds for a small message to reach the test server and come back. Lower is better. It decides how responsive the connection feels, separately from download speed.
Is 100 ms ping good?
It is usable for browsing, streaming and most video calls, but high for competitive gaming, where under 50 ms is the usual target.
Why is my ping high on Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi adds delay and variation from interference, distance and other devices sharing airtime. If ping is much lower on a cable, the problem is the wireless link rather than your ISP.
