Split your load low and central. Soft panniers keep weight off the subframe and shrug off drops. Heavy items — tools, water — ride lowest.
Layers beat bulk. A good merino base, a packable down mid-layer, and a waterproof shell handle everything from desert nights to mountain storms in a fraction of the space.
