The biggest mistake new adventure riders make is buying too much bike. That 1,250cc flagship looks unstoppable in the showroom — until you drop it in a sand wash forty kilometres from anywhere.
Middleweights are the sweet spot for most. Light enough to pick up, torquey enough for the highway, and cheap enough to accept the inevitable trail scars.
Be honest about your ratio. If you're ninety percent tarmac, a big tourer is bliss. If the dirt is the point, go lighter than your ego wants.
