Vesak is kept by Buddhists across South and Southeast Asia and beyond. Sri Lanka, where the whole country takes part, is our host — the streets of Colombo fill with lanterns, illuminated panels and free food stalls.
For Theravada Buddhists, Vesak marks three events in the life of the Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment and his final passing into parinibbana, all believed to have happened on the full moon of the month of Vesak. In Sri Lanka it is the most important day of the Buddhist year.
Homes and temples hang vesak kudu, delicate lanterns of bamboo and paper. Towering illuminated panels called thoran tell stories from the Buddha's previous lives. Along the roads, volunteers run dansala — stalls handing out free food and drink to anyone who passes, as an act of generosity.

Sound of the crowd
Bakthi gee, devotional songs, are sung by groups that travel between neighbourhoods. Temples resound with chanting of the Pali scriptures.

Why this date
Vesak invites Buddhists to reflect on the Buddha's teaching and to practise generosity, ethical conduct and meditation. Many abstain from alcohol and meat, and the sale of alcohol and meat is restricted in Sri Lanka on the day.
History
How it survived
Vesak was made a public holiday in British Ceylon in 1885 after a campaign by local Buddhist leaders, and the Buddhist flag was designed in Colombo the same year. In 1999 the United Nations recognised the Day of Vesak internationally.

When is Vesak in 2026 and 2027?
In Sri Lanka, Vesak Poya was observed on 30 May 2026, after religious leaders asked for the second full moon of May to be used. In 2027, Vesak Poya falls on Wednesday 19 May. Other countries may observe it on different dates.
Why do countries celebrate Vesak on different days?
Buddhist calendars differ by tradition and country. Some East Asian traditions mark the Buddha's birthday separately, often in April or May.
What is a dansala?
A free stall offering food or drink to the public, set up as an act of giving.
Can visitors join in?
