Popular comparisons

Before you pay

Buying checklist

  • Compare the renewal price, not only the first-term price.
  • Check how long the money-back window is and what it excludes (domains are usually non-refundable).
  • Choose a data-centre region close to most of your visitors.
  • Confirm daily backups and how easy it is to restore one.
  • Look for a staging site if you plan to update a live store or busy blog.
  • Make sure free SSL renews automatically.
  • Check which support channels are open on the plan you will actually buy.

Questions

Web hosting providers: common questions

Why does my hosting bill go up after the first term?

Most shared hosts advertise an introductory price that applies only to the first billing term, often the longest one. On renewal the plan moves to the regular rate, which can be several times higher. Check the renewal price on the checkout page before you pay.

Is shared hosting good enough for a small business site?

For a brochure site, a portfolio or a small blog, shared hosting is usually enough. Busy online stores or sites with traffic spikes tend to benefit from cloud or managed hosting, which isolate resources and scale more easily.

What is managed WordPress hosting?

It is hosting built only for WordPress, where the provider handles server tuning, caching, security and core updates. It costs more than shared hosting but removes much of the maintenance work.

Is a free domain really free?

Hosts that include a domain usually cover the first year only, on annual or longer plans. After that the domain renews at the normal registration price, and the domain fee is often deducted if you claim a refund.

Does the data-centre location matter?

Yes. A server closer to your visitors generally loads pages faster, and some businesses need data stored in a specific region for compliance. A CDN can reduce the gap for visitors further away.
