Ask every franchisor you speak with for its Franchise Disclosure Document. Federal law gives you at least 14 calendar days with it before you can sign or pay. Read Item 5, 6 and 7 for the money, Item 12 for territory, Item 19 for whether they make any financial performance representation at all, and Item 20 for the franchisee list.
Take the FDD and the franchise agreement to a franchise attorney and to an accountant who works with small businesses. Call current and former franchisees from the Item 20 list. Then — and only then — decide. Nobody here will rush that, and nobody here can give you legal or financial advice.

Auto detailing, pet grooming, lawn and pest care, mobile repair. The vehicle is the storefront, so there is no lease and no build-out — but the wrap, the equipment fit-out and the insurance are real line items.
In the FDD, look at Item 7 for whether the vehicle is included or financed separately, and Item 12 for how the territory is drawn.
Business coaching, bookkeeping, staffing, senior-care placement, travel and insurance agencies. Costs skew toward the initial fee, software licences, certification and local marketing rather than bricks and mortar.
Check Item 6 for technology and marketing-fund fees, and Item 11 for exactly what training and support you receive.
Snack, beverage, coffee and unattended micro-market routes. Machine count and the quality of the placements drive almost everything about the published investment figure — and about the work involved.
Ask who secures the locations, and read Item 12 closely: some route programs sell locations, not protected territory.
Mall, airport and grocery-adjacent kiosks selling accessories, beverages, phone repair and quick services. A fraction of the square footage of an inline store, with licence agreements instead of long leases.
Landlord licence terms are usually outside the FDD — ask to see a sample kiosk licence before you commit to anything.
Handyman, glass and screen repair, appliance service, restoration and maintenance brands. If you already hold a licence and a truck, the franchise is mostly buying a system, a brand and a lead-generation engine.
Item 8 tells you what you must buy from the franchisor or an approved supplier — that can matter more than the entry price.
Janitorial and specialty cleaning franchises, often sold as a package of customer accounts plus equipment and training. Frequently the lowest published entry point in franchising — and frequently the most misunderstood.
Read the account-package language line by line, and ask in writing what happens when one of those accounts cancels.
Academic tutoring, test prep, STEM and enrichment programs, music and early-learning. Many brands now offer in-home, in-school and online formats that avoid a leased learning centre entirely.
Item 7 varies enormously between the centre format and the mobile format — confirm which one the number describes.
Coffee trucks, dessert trailers, shaved ice and event catering concepts. Lower entry than a full restaurant, with the trade-off of permits, commissary requirements and weather.
Local health-department and commissary rules are not in the FDD. Price them for your own county before you sign.

Item 7 normally includes an estimate of additional funds for an initial period, often three months. Read that row carefully and then build your own figure with an accountant for your own market and your own household costs.
Many franchisors publish reductions on the initial fee for veterans, first responders or multi-unit signings. If a discount is offered to you, confirm it appears in the FDD or in a written addendum before you rely on it.
A low initial fee can sit alongside a ten-year term, a personal guarantee, a non-compete and required purchases from approved suppliers. Price the whole agreement, not the headline.
If you read nothing else on this page, read this. The Franchise Disclosure Document is where the real terms live, and federal law gives you at least fourteen days with it.
The franchisor's history, its executives, its litigation record and any bankruptcy. A thin or recently reorganised entity is not automatically a problem, but it is always a question worth asking out loud.
The initial franchise fee, all other recurring and one-off fees, and the estimated initial investment table. Item 7 is the only investment figure that matters — anything you read in an advert, including on this page, is illustrative context, not the number.
Required suppliers and purchase obligations, your ongoing obligations, whether any financing is offered, and the training, systems and marketing support the franchisor is actually contractually bound to provide.
Some agreements grant an exclusive protected area. Others grant none at all, and permit the franchisor to open company units or sell online into your area. Read this one twice.
This is the only place a franchisor may make a financial performance representation, and it is entirely optional — many franchisors include nothing. If a salesperson quotes you numbers that do not appear in Item 19, that is a red flag, and you should ask for it in writing.
Openings, closures, transfers and terminations over three years, plus contact details for current and former franchisees. Calling ten of them — including the ones who left — is the single most useful hour of research you can spend.
Audited financial statements, every agreement you would be asked to sign, and the receipt page. Signing that receipt starts the 14-day clock; it does not commit you to anything.
Franchising is not for everyone, and lower-investment franchising is not automatically easier. These are the situations where an independent, no-pressure introduction tends to help most.
You want a system and a brand rather than starting from zero, and you would like to keep your current job while you learn the business. Many lower-investment formats are structured to begin part-time or owner-operated.
Licensed trades, detailers, groomers and technicians often find the franchise decision is really a decision about branding, lead generation and back-office systems.
Home-based and route-based formats can be scheduled around school runs and caregiving. Ask franchisees in Item 20 what a real week looks like before you assume.
A great many franchisors publish discounts on the initial fee for veterans, and the SBA and VetFran programs are worth reading before you talk to anyone. Confirm any discount appears in the FDD.

Take Item 7 to a CPA who works with small businesses and build a conservative model of costs and working capital for your own market. Nobody — including us — can do that for you.
