The Fringe began in 1947 when eight theatre companies turned up uninvited to the new Edinburgh International Festival and performed anyway. It has grown to more than 3,000 shows across 300 venues and now runs concurrently with six other festivals.
August roughly doubles the city's population. Venues range from the Traverse and Summerhall to a converted public toilet and the back of a taxi. The Royal Mile becomes a 24-hour flyering shift.
