Human Knot
Team Building

The Human Knot is a physical problem-solving activity that requires teamwork, patience, and clear communication. As the team works to untangle themselves without letting go of each other's hands, natural leaders emerge and the group learns to coordinate their movements. It's a classic icebreaker that quickly breaks the ice through sheer proximity and shared struggle.

How to run it

  1. 1.Have the group stand in a tight circle.
  2. 2.Everyone reaches across the circle and grabs the right hand of someone not next to them.
  3. 3.Everyone reaches in with their left hand and grabs the hand of a different person.
  4. 4.The goal is to untangle the knot into a perfect circle without letting go of any hands.
  5. 5.If the chain breaks, they must start over.

Pro Tips

  • Keep groups between 8-12 people; too many makes it impossible.
  • If a group is completely stuck for a long time, allow them one 'break and reconnect'.
  • Ensure everyone is comfortable with physical contact before starting.
