SmokeSmoldering fires — a frayed lamp cord, a couch cushion, an overloaded power strip behind the entertainment center — produce heavy smoke long before flame. Photoelectric sensors are tuned for exactly that, and monitored units send a signal even when nobody is home to hear the horn.

HeatGarages, attics, workshops and kitchens are where smoke alarms nuisance-trip, so people disable them. A heat detector watches for a fast temperature climb instead — it ignores burnt toast and shower steam but reacts to a car battery charger or a dryer lint fire.

COCarbon monoxide has no color, no odor and no taste. A cracked heat exchanger in a 20-year-old furnace, a blocked water-heater flue, or a generator run too close to the house during an ice storm can all raise levels while the family sleeps.

WaterNot fire, but the same idea: catch it early. Puck sensors sit in the water-heater pan, behind the washer and under the kitchen sink. A separate low-temperature alert flags a room drifting toward freezing before the supply lines split.

Smoke, a heat spike or a CO reading crosses threshold. Every interconnected sounder in the house goes off at once, and the panel starts its signal sequence immediately.
The alarm travels over the cellular radio, with Wi-Fi as a secondary path and a sealed battery for outages. Transmission time varies with carrier coverage at your address.
A monitoring operator attempts the premises, then works your contact list. Fire and CO signals are handled under the center's fire protocol, which is shorter than the burglary protocol.
The center relays your address and alarm type to the appropriate 911 answering point. Whether, when and how responders arrive is decided by your local fire department and dispatch policy — never by us. You get an incident summary afterward.

Monitoring and any request for dispatch are subject to your monitoring agreement, local permit rules and the dispatch policy of the public safety answering point serving your address.

Modern furnishings burn fast. Fire-service educators commonly cite roughly two minutes to get out of a typical home once the alarm sounds — which is why the plan has to exist before the alarm does.
The door and one window. Check that the window actually opens, that the screen releases, and that a child or grandparent can work it without help. Second-floor bedrooms need a ladder stored in the room, not the garage.

The technician found our upstairs smoke alarms were fourteen years old — well past replacement — and that we had nothing at all in the attic where the furnace lives. He mapped out placement, explained why, and did not upsell me a camera package I did not ask about.
