SSDI and SSI
Applying is hard. That is the system, not you.
Most people who apply for disability benefits are turned down the first time. It is not a verdict on you or your condition, and it is not the end of the process — it is the ordinary first step of a slow one. Here is how it really works.

Two programs with one application
People say “disability” as though it were one thing. It is two, and you do not have to work out which one you need — one application is checked against both.
Who it is for
People who have worked and paid Social Security taxes for long enough.
People with very little income and savings, whether or not they have worked.
What decides it
Your work history — measured in credits, usually about ten years of work, less if you are younger.
Your income and what you own. There is no work requirement at all.
Savings limit
None.
$2,000 if you are single, $3,000 for a couple. The home you live in and usually one car do not count.
Monthly amount
Based on what you earned over your working life, so it differs for everyone.
Up to $994 a month for one person, $1,491 for a couple, in 2026. Some states add to it.
Health cover
Medicare, but not straight away — see the clock below.
Medicaid, in most states automatically.
Some people qualify for both at once. That is common and it is fine — it is called a concurrent claim, and the same application covers it.
How long it takes
The clock nobody explains
This is the part that catches people out. If you are approved for SSDI, the money does not start on the day you became unwell, and health cover starts later still. Knowing the shape of it in advance is worth more than almost anything else on this page.
Month 0
The date your disability began
Called your onset date. Everything else is measured from here, not from the day you applied.
Months 1–5
The five-month wait
A waiting period written into the law. No SSDI cash is paid for these months, however clear-cut your case is.
Month 6
SSDI payments can begin
The first month you can be paid for. If your decision took longer than this, back pay usually covers it.
Month 30
Medicare begins
Twenty-four months after your cash benefits start. The five waiting months do not count toward it, which is why the real wait is closer to twenty-nine months than twenty-four.
Two conditions skip the queue entirely
- ALS — Medicare starts the first month you are entitled to benefits. There is no five-month wait and no twenty-four month wait.
- Kidney failure needing dialysis or a transplant — Medicare runs on its own separate clock, usually from the fourth month of dialysis, and earlier in some cases.
SSA also keeps a list of several hundred conditions that are fast-tracked for a decision, called Compassionate Allowances. It is worth checking whether yours is on it.
How they decide
The five questions, in order
SSA works through the same five questions for everyone. It stops as soon as it has an answer, which is why understanding the order helps — most refusals happen at question three.
Are you working?
If you earn more than $1,690 a month in 2026 — $2,830 if you are blind — that usually counts as substantial work and the answer stops here. Earning less than that does not disqualify you.
Is your condition severe?
It must significantly limit your ability to do basic work activities, and it must have lasted or be expected to last at least twelve months, or to be terminal.
Is it on SSA's list of conditions?
SSA keeps a listing of impairments considered severe enough on their own. If yours is on it and you meet the criteria, the answer can be yes here. If not, the questions continue — this is not a refusal.
Can you do the work you used to do?
If SSA decides you can still do a job you have held before, the claim stops here. This is where good medical evidence about what you can no longer do matters most.
Can you do any other kind of work?
Your age, education, skills and condition are weighed together. Age matters more than people expect — the rules are applied differently once you are older.
Nothing in this list is a judgement about your worth or your effort. It is a checklist an examiner works through, and it can be answered better with the right evidence.
The numbers
What the 2026 figures actually are
These are set nationally and change every January. They are limits and maximums, not what anyone is promised.

Benefits rose by 2.8% for 2026. The SSI savings limits are the exception — they are fixed in law and do not rise with inflation.

You are allowed to try working
This is the most under-used part of the system. SSDI has a trial work period that lets you test whether you can work without losing your benefits straight away, and SSA's Ticket to Work programme provides free employment support. Trying and stopping does not automatically end your claim.

If you are turned down
A refusal is a stage, not the end
Most people who are eventually approved were refused at least once. There are four stages after a refusal, and you generally have 60 days to move to the next one — that deadline is the thing to protect.
Reconsideration
A fresh review by someone who did not make the first decision. New medical evidence can be added here, and should be.
A hearing with a judge
In front of an administrative law judge. You can attend, explain in your own words, and bring a representative. Most hearings are now held by video or phone.
Appeals Council
A review of whether the judge applied the rules correctly. It can uphold, overturn, or send the case back for another hearing.
Federal court
The final route. Rare, and one where legal representation matters.
SSA reports that waits have been getting shorter — decisions at the first stage were arriving around 40 days faster in 2026 than at the start of 2025 — but this is still measured in months, not weeks. Protect the 60-day deadline above everything else.

Applying is free, and there is free help with it. If you do decide to use a paid representative, their fee is capped and regulated by SSA, and they are paid only if you win.

Straight answers
The questions people are most afraid to ask, answered plainly.
No. Most first applications are refused, including many approved later on appeal. It means an examiner did not find enough evidence in the file — not that your condition is not real. What matters after a refusal is the 60-day deadline to ask for the next stage.
Longer than feels reasonable. A first decision is generally measured in months, and appeals add more. SSA reports that waits have been shortening — first-stage decisions were arriving around 40 days faster in 2026 than at the start of 2025 — but nobody should plan around a quick answer. Separately, SSDI has a five-month waiting period written into the law before any payment can be made.
Within limits. Earning more than $1,690 a month in 2026 — $2,830 if blind — usually counts as substantial work and can end a claim. Earning less does not disqualify you, and a trial work period lets you test working.
SSDI comes from your work history and the taxes you paid, with no savings limit. SSI is needs-based, with no work requirement and a savings limit of $2,000 for one person or $3,000 for a couple. One application covers both.
For SSDI, twenty-four months after your cash benefits begin. Because of the separate five-month waiting period before those benefits start, the wait from your disability onset date is usually closer to twenty-nine months. Two exceptions skip it: ALS, where Medicare begins with entitlement, and kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, which runs on its own clock.
Not to apply, and plenty of people succeed without one. Representation becomes more common at the hearing stage. If you do use a representative, SSA caps and must approve their fee, and they are normally paid only out of back pay if you win. You should never pay someone up front simply to file an application.
Records describing what you can and cannot do, not just a diagnosis. Claims turn on function — how long you can stand, lift, concentrate or keep a schedule. Consistent treatment and a doctor who documents limits clearly matter most.
