Most automotive franchise portals make you declare your net worth and liquid capital before they will tell you anything at all. We think that is backwards. Learn how the segment works first — then decide, in your own time, whether you want to approach anyone.

Nothing here is fast, and that is deliberate. The sequence below is the one franchise attorneys tend to recommend, and it puts the disclosure document before the conversation rather than after it.
One email address. That is the entire ask. Most automotive franchise portals open with a net-worth and liquid-capital screener before they will show you anything — this page does not, and never will.
We send a plain-English orientation to the nine automotive service models: what a shift actually looks like, whether the model is bay-driven or throughput-driven, how much of it is real estate versus labour, and which ones need an ASE-certified team on day one.
You request it, from them — we do not sell franchises and we do not hold anyone's paperwork. Under the FTC Franchise Rule the franchisor must place the Franchise Disclosure Document in your hands at least 14 calendar days before you sign an agreement or pay them a dollar.
Item 5 is the initial fee. Item 6 is every recurring fee. Item 7 is the estimated initial investment. Item 19 is where a franchisor may — but is never required to — make a financial performance representation. Item 20 lists current and former franchisees with contact details.
A franchise attorney who has redlined agreements before, and a CPA who has read an Item 7 before. Then call the franchisees in Item 20 — current and former — and ask them what they wish they had known. Nobody on this page can do that part for you.

“Automotive franchise” is not one business. These nine models differ enormously in build cost, staffing, real-estate dependency and day-to-day rhythm. Read them as orientation, then read the specific FDD.
Two to six bays, drive-through service, tickets measured in minutes rather than hours. Volume comes from location and signage far more than from marketing spend, and staffing skews toward trained technicians rather than certified mechanics.
Check Item 7 for the pit or lift build-out and Item 11 for the point-of-sale system the franchisor mandates.
Inventory-heavy by nature: you are carrying tire SKUs, running a mounting and balancing floor, and pairing it with brake and alignment work. Supplier programmes and national account arrangements are usually spelled out by the franchisor.
Read Item 8 closely — required suppliers and rebate arrangements matter enormously in this model.
Diagnostics, engine and suspension work, scheduled maintenance. The scarce resource is not customers, it is technicians — most operators say hiring and keeping an ASE-certified crew is the whole job.
Item 15 tells you whether you personally must participate in the operation of the outlet.
Panel work, paint booths, frame straightening. Work arrives largely through insurer direct-repair programmes, which means your relationship with carriers shapes the schedule. Environmental permitting and paint-booth compliance are real, ongoing obligations.
Item 7 rarely includes local environmental permits — price those separately with your own contractor.
Paint correction, interior restoration, ceramic and paint-protection film. Often the lowest published entry point in the segment and frequently available as a mobile or van-based build, which changes the real-estate maths completely.
If a brand offers both mobile and fixed-site formats, they usually carry two very different Item 7 tables.
This is a site-development business that happens to wash cars. Land, tunnel equipment, vacuum canopies and water reclamation dominate the build, and unlimited-wash membership programmes dominate the operating model.
Item 7 for this model often assumes a leased pad — confirm whether land acquisition is inside or outside the figure.
Fewer cars, far bigger tickets, and a diagnostic reputation that takes years to build locally. Many brands in this niche pair transmission work with general repair to keep bays busy between rebuilds.
Ask Item 20 franchisees how long their ramp to a full technician roster actually took.
Windshield replacement has quietly become a technology business: nearly every modern replacement triggers an advanced driver-assistance recalibration, which needs a level floor, controlled lighting and targets. Insurance networks drive most of the volume.
Confirm in Item 11 whether the franchisor supplies calibration equipment or you buy it yourself.
High-voltage safety certification, battery diagnostics, thermal management and software work. Still a young franchise category, which means shorter Item 20 lists and fewer franchisees to call — take that into account when you weigh it.
Short outlet lists in Item 20 are a signal to slow down, not a reason to hurry.

Automotive franchising draws a wider range of owners than most segments — from technicians who already know the work to investors who will never pick up a wrench. Each starts from a different question.
You have run budgets, hired people and managed a P&L, and you would rather do it for yourself. Most automotive brands will train you on the trade — what they cannot teach quickly is management. Read Item 11 to see exactly how much training you actually get.
You already know the work. A franchise mainly buys you a brand, a supplier programme and a system. Ask Item 20 franchisees whether that system was worth the royalty in their market.
Territory rights in Item 12 are the whole conversation. Check whether the franchisor reserves the right to sell online, through fleet accounts or via a different channel inside your area.
Many automotive brands publish a veteran discount on the Item 5 initial fee, and the SBA maintains free counselling for veteran business owners. Confirm any discount in the FDD itself rather than in a brochure.
Car wash and quick lube models are as much site development as they are service businesses. If a brand markets itself as semi-absentee, Item 15 will tell you whether the franchisor still requires your personal participation.
Transfer and succession rules sit in Item 17. Some agreements allow transfer to a family member without a full transfer fee; plenty do not. Find out before you build a twenty-year plan around it.
None of this costs anything and none of it requires our help. It is simply what the rules give you — and the part prospective franchisees most often let slide when a deal starts moving quickly.
